For AI Agents

Hand your agent this brief or the ReUI MCP, not a screenshot. Installs with a ReUI Pro or Ultimate license.

When to use

  • A landing page section that walks visitors through a product in 3 to 5 numbered steps
  • A getting started explainer for a developer tool that sends readers on to its docs
  • A product tour where picking a step swaps in a preview of the app screen it describes

When not to use

  • A bare grid of numbered steps to place under a heading and copy you already wrote: use the Card blocks
  • A live overview page of KPI tiles, charts and tables wired to real data: use the Dashboard blocks
  • The opening section of a landing page, with its main headline and signup action: use the Hero blocks

Agent notes

  • The eyebrow Badge, h2 headline and lede are written inline in HowItWorks, not in the data file; rewrite them there
  • HowItWorks sets its own py-12 padding, max-w-7xl width and bg-background fill; strip them inside a page that already pads its sections
  • Step layouts reflow on the @container width set inside HowItWorks, not the viewport, so they follow the column the block sits in

Third-party API docs

  • Motion v12: API reference, docs, used by 1 of 5 blocks (the docs follow the latest Motion, with no React API break since v12)

Shadcn How It Works Blocks: A Product in 3 to 5 Steps

A how it works section sits between the promise a hero makes and the CTA that closes the page, and its job is to turn the product into a short sequence a reader can follow. Every block here opens the same way, with a pill eyebrow, an h2 and a lede, then walks the product in 3 to 5 numbered steps. What changes is how the steps are laid out and what sits beside them.

Of these 5, 3 lay every step out at once and carry no client state: 3 steps in 1 Card on a hairline grid, 4 step cards topped by an isometric logo scene, and 5 step cards on an emerald fill. The other 2 run the steps as Tabs. Each step opens a different product screen rebuilt in markup, and the steps advance on a timer that holds while the pointer or keyboard focus is inside the walkthrough.

The parts are stock. ReUI Badge and IconTile, with shadcn Card and Item, appear in every block, Button carries the actions in the 3 grid blocks, and the 2 walkthroughs add Tabs, Progress and Kbd, with Table and Avatar in the 3 step walkthrough.

All How It Works Blocks

Open any block on its own page for a live preview, the components it is built from, and the install command.

  • Three-Step Explainer Static How It Works card with 3 numbered steps on a hairline grid and 2 header actions
  • Onboarding Step Cards Drifting isometric logo tiles topping 4 How It Works step cards in a 1, 2 or 4 column grid
  • Setup Guide Cards Emerald 5-step How It Works card grid with dot texture, lime corner glow and capability rows
  • Product Tour Tabs Horizontal 4-step How It Works tab strip driving an auto-advancing app console on a sky photo
  • Vertical Demo Tabs Vertical 3-step How It Works tabs that swap analytics, crew coverage and HR dashboard consoles

How Each Block Lays Out Its Steps

  • 3 steps on a hairline grid A single Card holds a linked eyebrow, the heading, a docs and registry Button pair and 3 Item steps that share hairline rules, stacked in 1 column until the container fits 3.
  • 4 cards with isometric scenes Each card opens on a dark scene of drifting isometric logo tiles, swept by a light that runs along the grid lines, then a Step N Badge, a description and its own footer button, in a grid of 1, 2 or 4 columns.
  • 5 cards on an emerald fill 5 numbered Card steps on a dark emerald surface with a dot texture and a lime corner glow, reflowing 1, 3 or 5 per row under a header with 2 capability rows.
  • 4 step tabs over a registry console A Tabs strip of 4 steps, 1, 2 or 4 across by container width, that opens a registry overview with Progress bars, a component grid, a CLI install list and an integrations grid, all inside 1 app shell set on a sky photo.
  • 3 step tabs beside 3 consoles A vertical tab column that sits beside a 4:3 frame on wide containers and swaps a production analytics screen with an order Table, a crew coverage desk and a people dashboard with a month calendar, with Avatar portraits in all 3.

Layout, Motion and Accessibility

  • Every block switches its layout with container queries, so the steps reflow by the width of the column the block sits in rather than the width of the window.
  • The 2 walkthroughs advance every 6 seconds (the 4 step strip) or every 5 seconds (the 3 step column), restart the wait when a step is picked, and hold while the pointer or keyboard focus is inside.
  • Under prefers-reduced-motion the walkthroughs stop advancing, and the tile drift, the light sweeps, the sky photo drift and the console loops stop as well.
  • The console content is decorative: the 4 step strip hides it from assistive tech and the 3 step column exposes each console as 1 labelled image, so a screen reader hears the steps rather than the fixture data.
  • The isometric scenes and the emerald step cards keep a dark fill in both themes.
  • The steps live in a data file inside each block, so changing the copy or the order of a step does not touch the markup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I pick a step grid or a tabbed walkthrough?

The 3 grid blocks show every step at once and have no client state, so they read the same for every visitor. The 2 tabbed blocks show 1 step at a time, open a different product screen for each step, and advance on a timer. Pick a grid when the steps are the point, and tabs when the product screens are.

Do the walkthroughs respect reduced motion?

Yes. Under prefers-reduced-motion the 2 tabbed blocks stop advancing on their own and their ambient loops stand still, and the isometric tiles and light sweeps in the 4 card block stop too. The tabs stay selectable by click, tap or keyboard.

How do I install a how it works block?

Open the block on its page and copy the install command (the shadcn CLI with the @reui registry and your license key) or the AI prompt, and run it in your project, for example pnpm dlx shadcn@latest add @reui/how-it-works-4 for the tabbed registry console. The block, its fixtures and every ReUI and shadcn dependency land as editable source in a single run.

Shadcn How It Works Blocks: Numbered Steps and Product Tours

These 5 blocks explain a product in 3 to 5 numbered steps, either laid out at once in a grid or run as tabs that swap a product console per step.
