When to use

  • Numbered page links between previous and next controls under a list, a table or search results
  • Compact pagers of back and forward controls alone or beside a page count, for narrow spaces
  • Table footers pairing page controls with a rows per page select, a range count or a page jump field

When not to use

  • A records table that sorts and filters its rows and needs its pager built in: use the Data Grid component
  • A whole table section with a title, toolbar, rows and a working pager: use the Base blocks
  • Page controls kept in local state that run click handlers, with no URL per page: use the Button Group component

Agent notes

  • PaginationLink renders its own anchor and takes neither render nor asChild; swap that anchor for your router link in your copy of the component
  • Every href is a hash placeholder and each page number, count and current page is typed in; derive them from your page state or URL

Shadcn Pagination: Page Navigation Controls

Shadcn Pagination is a navigation component for breaking large datasets into pages. It provides previous/next buttons, numbered pages, and ellipsis for large page ranges. It aligns with Radix UI and Base UI link components, and is fully compatible with Shadcn Create style options.

It helps users navigate long lists, tables, and search results without loading all data at once.

ReUI lists pagination components alongside Shadcn Table and Shadcn Data Grid so you evaluate button placement, page number display, and responsive behavior. The sections below cover what it is, why teams use it, and integration components.

What is Shadcn Pagination?

In UI terms, pagination is a navigation control for moving between pages of results. Shadcn Pagination provides previous/next buttons, clickable page numbers, and ellipsis to skip ranges so users jump to any page quickly.

Components here show table pagination, search result navigation, and list pagination. They help you decide page number visibility, button size, and responsive behavior before integrating pagination into data-heavy pages.

Why Use Shadcn Pagination?

Pagination improves performance and UX by breaking large datasets into manageable chunks. Users see only what fits on one page, pages load faster, and users control how much data they consume. They provide clear progress (page 3 of 47) so users understand scope.

The layouts on this page place pagination under Shadcn Table and Shadcn Data Grid in real dashboards.

Shadcn Pagination Features

  • Previous and Next Buttons. Move one page forward or back, with disabled state at boundaries so users know they've reached the end.
  • Numbered Page Links. Clickable page numbers so users jump directly to a specific page instead of clicking next repeatedly.
  • Ellipsis for Large Ranges. PaginationEllipsis indicates skipped pages ("...") so long page lists stay compact.
  • Next.js Link Integration. Use asChild to compose Next.js Link so pagination links work with client-side routing.
  • Active Page Indication. Highlight the current page number so users know their location in the result set.

Integrating with Other Components

Place pagination below Shadcn Table or Shadcn Data Grid for managing result sets. Add a rows-per-page selector next to pagination to let users control density.

Combine pagination with Shadcn Input search above the table. Use both together so users can search results and then paginate within them.

Pair pagination with Shadcn Card layouts for paginated content feeds or product galleries. Use Shadcn Button for load-more components as an alternative to traditional numbered pagination.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is pagination better than infinite scroll for a list?

Use pagination when users need to jump to a specific page, understand total results, or when performance matters (showing all data is slow). Use infinite scroll for discovery-driven browsing (social media, feeds) where continuous exploration is the goal.

How many page numbers should I show in the controls?

Show 5-7 page numbers around the current page for clarity. Use ellipsis (...) to skip ranges. On mobile, show fewer numbers to save space. Always show prev/next and first/last page indicators.

How do I update pagination when filters change?

Pagination is independent of filters. When a user applies a filter, reset to page 1. Use URL query params (page=2&filter=category) so bookmarking and sharing work correctly.

Is Shadcn Pagination accessible for keyboard and screen reader users?

Yes. Each page link is a proper link element so keyboard Tab navigation works. Use meaningful labels (Page 3) and aria-current="page" on the active link so screen readers announce which page the user is on.

Where should I store pagination state: in URL query params or component state?

Store it in URL query params (preferred). When a user clicks a page link, update the URL and fetch new data. This way, users can bookmark, share links, and navigate back correctly.

How do ReUI pagination components differ from a minimal example?

ReUI shows pagination below Shadcn Table and Shadcn Data Grid in real dashboards. You see responsive behavior, integration with filters and search, and combination with data display together, which is closer to production than a single control.
