Shadcn Marker

Browse 6 production-ready Shadcn Marker components for agent run logs, tool call rows, live run status, and labeled dividers inside a transcript. Shadcn Marker ships in a Radix UI build and a Base UI build and is fully aligned with Shadcn Create style options, so the radius, fonts, and color tokens in these previews match the code you export.

For AI Agents

Hand your agent this brief or the ReUI MCP, not a screenshot. Free to install.

When to use

  • Agent run logs and tool call lists, one short line of status text per step
  • Labeled dividers that split a transcript or run log into named phases
  • Ruled summaries such as changed files, and rows that open a link or run an action

When not to use

  • A plain horizontal or vertical rule between content sections or menu items: use the Separator component
  • A complete run console with approval steps, log views or an outcome report: use the Agent Activity blocks
  • Dated events or milestones joined by indicator dots and a connecting line: use the Timeline component

Agent notes

  • Make a row a link or button with render on the base twin and asChild on the radix twin
  • MarkerIcon is aria-hidden with everything inside it, so the MarkerContent text alone must say what the row means
  • An svg in MarkerIcon takes each style's icon size only while it carries no size class of its own

Shadcn Marker: Run Logs, Status Rows, and Labeled Separators

Shadcn Marker is a single-line row for small status text. It has 3 parts (Marker for the row, MarkerIcon for the glyph, MarkerContent for the text) and one variant prop that sets the shape. It ships in a Radix UI build and a Base UI build from the same structure, and Shadcn Create radius, font, and color tokens apply to it like any other primitive.

On screen it renders muted, small text with a fixed icon column, so a long column of rows stays aligned however much the labels differ in length. The separator variant turns the same row into a divider that carries a label, and the border variant draws a rule under it.

ReUI shows markers where they actually get used: tool call logs, run status columns with one step still in flight, agent transcripts grouped by phase, and changed-file summaries, next to Shadcn Badge, Shadcn Card, and Shadcn Spinner. The sections below cover what the component is, why teams use it, which features matter, and how it fits into a larger surface.

What is Shadcn Marker?

In UI terms, a marker is one line of secondary text with an optional glyph in front of it. Shadcn Marker fixes that structure so you stop rebuilding it in every file: Marker is the flex row, MarkerIcon is the icon slot, and MarkerContent is the text. MarkerIcon is aria-hidden, so the glyph stays decorative and MarkerContent carries the meaning of the row.

The variant prop takes 3 values. Default is a plain row. Separator draws a hairline rule on both sides of the label, so a divider can read Planning or Verify instead of nothing. Border adds a rule under the row, which turns a short list into ruled lines. The 6 components here show all 3, with icons, status badges, a step that is still running, and markers rendered as links and as a button.

Why Use Shadcn Marker?

Agent consoles, chat threads, and activity feeds are mostly made of these rows, and writing them by hand means re-deciding icon size, text color, and row rhythm in each file until they drift apart. Marker moves those decisions into the style layer. MarkerIcon never shrinks and MarkerContent is min-width zero with word breaking, so a long file path wraps inside the row instead of widening it.

The same rows are what the paid blocks are assembled from. 14 of the 17 blocks in AI and Agents import Marker directly, 11 in AI Chat and 3 in Agent Activity. The examples on this page are the row on its own; those blocks are the screen around it, with approval steps, Summary, Detailed and Raw log views, and a run outcome report.

Shadcn Marker Features

  • 3 Variants. One variant prop switches the row between a plain line, a labeled separator with a rule on each side, and a bordered row with a rule underneath.
  • Decorative Icon Slot. MarkerIcon holds an icon or a Shadcn Spinner and is aria-hidden by construction, so a screen reader reads the content text once and never announces the glyph.
  • Per-Style Icon Sizing. An icon that carries no size class of its own takes the size the active style defines, so the same markup reads correctly in the compact styles and the roomy ones.
  • Long Text Handling. MarkerContent is min-width zero and breaks long words, so a file path, a URL, or a command wraps inside the row rather than pushing it past its container.
  • Polymorphic Root. Render the row as an anchor or a button with render in the Base UI build or asChild in the Radix UI build. An anchor root picks up an underline and a hover color from the style layer.
  • Shadcn Create Compatible. All 8 Shadcn Create styles (Vega, Nova, Maia, Lyra, Mira, Luma, Sera, and Rhea) and the Radius, Font Family, and Color Scale controls apply to marker previews and to the code you export.

Shadcn Marker in Chat and Agent Interfaces

In a chat thread, markers are the lines that are not messages: a system note, a tool the assistant just called, a dated divider between sessions. They sit between Shadcn Message rows and Shadcn Bubble turns without competing with them, because the muted small scale reads as chrome rather than as content. Keep a labeled divider as a plain marker and do not give it role="separator", since a separator takes its name from aria-label and treats its contents as presentational, which would drop the visible label.

In a run panel, wrap the column in a Shadcn Card, group the phases with separator markers, and put a Shadcn Spinner in the icon slot of the step that is still running, with role="status" on that row. Status color belongs on a Shadcn Badge inside the content rather than on the row text, so the row keeps the same muted scale in every style. For a long log, a Shadcn Scroll Area bounds the height without changing the rows.

Integrating With Other Components

Use markers as the non-message lines of a conversation. Place them between Shadcn Message rows and Shadcn Bubble turns for system notes and tool calls, add a separator marker as a dated divider between sessions, and keep Shadcn Attachment cards and Shadcn Message Scroller behavior around them unchanged.

In a run panel, wrap markers in a Shadcn Card and carry state with a Shadcn Badge in the content, a Shadcn Spinner in the icon slot, and a Shadcn Progress bar above the column. Fold a finished phase into a Shadcn Collapsible, bound a long log with a Shadcn Scroll Area, and switch to Shadcn Timeline when the run needs a rail rather than a flat list.

For the assembled screen, ReUI Pro ships 17 AI and Agents blocks on these same primitives: 12 in AI Chat and 5 in Agent Activity, covering approval steps, a live run feed with Summary, Detailed and Raw views, a research trace, an MCP call table, and a run outcome report. 14 of them import Marker directly, so the rows on this page are the exact parts those blocks are built from.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Shadcn Marker used for in real products?

Agent run logs, tool call rows, chat system lines, changed-file summaries, and labeled dividers between the phases of a long transcript. Anywhere a screen needs one line of secondary status text with an optional icon, a marker is faster than another flex row with its own spacing rules.

What is the difference between Marker and Separator?

Shadcn Separator draws a rule and holds nothing. The marker separator variant draws the rule on both sides of a visible label, so the divider can name a phase. Leave role="separator" off that marker: a separator is named by aria-label and its contents count as presentational, so the label you can see would not be announced.

How do I show a step that is still running?

Put a Shadcn Spinner in MarkerIcon and set role="status" on the Marker root. Because the icon slot is aria-hidden, the spinner's own role never reaches the accessibility tree, so the marker row makes the announcement once instead of twice.

How do I size the icon inside a marker?

Leave it alone. The style layer sizes any icon in the row that has no size class of its own, and the value differs per style. Adding a size class opts that one icon out of the ladder, so it looks right in the style you were previewing and wrong in the rest.

Can a marker be a link or a button?

Yes. The root is polymorphic: pass render in the Base UI build or asChild in the Radix UI build. A marker rendered as an anchor gets an underline and a hover color from the style layer at no cost. A marker rendered as a button does not, so give the button its own hover treatment.

When should I use Marker instead of Timeline?

Marker is one flat row, so a column of them reads as a log. Shadcn Timeline adds a vertical rail with connectors and is the better fit for dated events, ordered milestones, or anything where the line between items carries meaning. Agent runs usually want markers; audit histories usually want a timeline.

How are ReUI Marker components different from a minimal demo?

The 6 examples here put markers in surfaces that behave like production: a tool call log with real labels, a run card with a failed row and a live one, a transcript grouped by phase, and a changed-file summary with counts. For the assembled version, AI and Agents in ReUI Pro has 17 blocks built on the same parts.
